There are several independent motorcycle shops in the Kansas City area, and even more that have shut down over the past few years, but how many shops do you know of that are actually expanding and growing their business; especially in this economy? I know of only one; Knobtown Cycle in Kansas City, Missouri.

Owner Kit Fox opened for business in April 2004 at the intersection of 350 Highway and Noland Road in Knobtown, Missouri, which is just south of Kansas City International Raceway (KCIR). From the day they opened, Knobtown Cycle earned the respect of the local motorcycle community by providing great customer service and reasonably priced service, parts and accessories. Within five years, Knobtown Cycle had outgrown their small shop, so in August 2009, Knobtown Cycle pulled up stakes and moved just down to road on 350 Highway to a new 3,000 square foot building, which more than doubled the size of their original shop. The new location enabled Kit to greatly expand his shop area as well as his parts, accessories, and apparel showroom. During a recent visit, Kit told me he will soon be adding a loft in the stock room behind their parts counter, which will give them another 500 square feet.

Another reason for Knobtown Cycle’s success is the experienced staff Kit has brought on-board to help run his business. Mark Jacobs, who handles the parts counter, has been in the motorcycle parts and accessories business for years, and Shawn McCollum, who works his magic in the service area has been involved with motorcycles since the age of six. Along with owning the business, Kit is also a certified Harley-Davidson mechanic, so you can rest assured that between Kit and Shawn, your bike is in good hands when you drop your baby off for service or whatever you need done. To round things out, Jimmy Schriver with Slim’s Cycle Seats, who is well known and respected in the local motorcycle industry also works the parts counter when needed.
